The Queen of the Winter Flowers – Camellias
The Camellia is by no means the first shrub that comes to mind when thinking about trees and shrubs that grow well in the subtropical regions of the world but none the less these breathtaking flowering plants do have a place in gardens in this climate zone and given the right soil preparation, location and care can be grown successfully, rewarding their owners with some of the most stunning flowers that the floral world has to offer. Gallery – Floriferous Natives for Urban Gardens
This iconic Australian native flowering plant can be grown in the subtropics if given excellent drainage and good airflow around the plant itself.
A wonderfully hardy native shrub growing 1m. it also comes in a pink and a white flowering form.
The Hovea is a fast growing shrub to 2m bearing purple pea shaped flowers in spring.
This particular tea tree cultivar is a favourite amongst many a home gardener for it’s delicate pink flowers. Growing to around 1.5m.
hebaceous perennial bearing the infamous papery daisy-like flowers in a range of colours.
Growing to around 6m the flowers are actually white and it is the calyxes that appear afterwards that are red.
This is the pink form of rice flower commonly used in flower arrangemenst it also makes a great backyard shrub. Comes in white also.
This is a busy shrub growing around 2m. It bears yellow pea shaped flowers with red markings.
